I took two interesting insights from a recent PARC ebroadcast entitled “From Concept to Commerce: New Models for Increasing Innovation”. Firstly the authors of the ebroadcast (Frost & Sullivan) identified that the top global innovators have the same approach to innovation - they build multi-disciplinary innovation eco-systems that span outside the organisation to external partners. Secondly they discussed the role of internal R&D, saying that the ecosystem approach turned R&D teams into scouts as well as inventors. As an aside, they talked about the need for R&D and product marketing to work together. Couldn’t agree more. Through our own clients, we see that when marketing and R&D work together the resulting innovations are far stronger.

Advanced batteries will be the most popular alternative energy investment in 2009, the unstructured data deluge creates the next great information leaders, and real-time crowdsourcing will control much of the interesting things people look for on the web: these were among the predictions at the Churchill Club’s 11th Annual Top Ten Tech Trends event on May 20. Some great work here from Melbourne based designers Co-op. From their attention to typography, to the colour choices on each project, the work has an extremely considered feel to it.

TCD has just opened a new postgraduate research centre at TCD to combine art, technology and entrepreneurship.
Interviewed in the business section of The Irish Times, the director of the Arts Technology Research Laboratory (ATRL), Matthew Causey, cited examples such as Second Life and the Nintendo Wii as examples of commercial areas that marry elements of performance and artistic design.
This is a really interesting venture that highlights the importance of bringing information technology together with other disciplines to stimulate innovation. So here’s the question - where is the national strategy to kickstart convergence between IT and other disciplines, notably health and greentech?
